Frustration Nation

If I had to put all of my emotions into one word following Friday night’s loss, I wouldn’t be able to do it.

I honestly don’t know where to start my attempt to vent all of my frustrations to whomever chooses to read this. It’s literally to the point where I could write everything down on paper that pissed me off tonight, put them in a hat, and select in draft lottery fashion which topics to blog about here.

Jon Lester’s outing: I don’t know what was on Jon Lester’s mind on Friday night, but it couldn’t have been baseball. The guy is just flat out too good to give up a career-high eleven hits to a team that’s one game over .500, who just so happen to have a ridiculous amount of injured position players as well. It just doesn’t happen. So my frustrations start there.

Jhonny Peralta? Really?: Brandon Inge and Carlos Guillen hit the disabled list for Detroit, which forced their hand to minor league pitcher Giovanni Soto to the Indians, in exchange for Jhonny Peralta and cash. Peralta shows up with the Tigers, batting .246, with seven homers and a weak .308 on-base percentage. The guy switches to a Tigers uniform, and now all of a sudden he turns into Al Kaline, hitting two homers off of Jon Lester, one of the top left-handers in the game, when Peralta is hitting .239 against lefties this season.

Running out of innings: After walking to lead-off the bottom of the seventh, Eric Patterson gets gunned down trying to steal second base with no outs, and the top of the order coming up. He’s been with the Red Sox for 20 games now, and hasn’t attempted to steal a base. Why now? Especially against a catcher who has thrown out 40% or more base stealers in five of his eight big league seasons, that was not the time to get greedy.

Not being able to deliver the big hit: This is a very vague topic that could be directed at many names, so let’s just blame everyone. As a team, the Red Sox hit .200 with runners in scoring position on Friday. You ready for this number? They left twenty men on base. Twenty. You mean to tell me that the team with the most doubles in all of baseball, and the second most homers, can’t come up with one measly single when there are runners in scoring position? Not one?

Health is on the Way

If you haven't heard, ratings on NESN are down 36%.

Apparently nobody wants to dedicate three hours a night to watching a makeshift baseball team. It's almost as if you're a NASCAR fan. Would you still watch your favorite driver if he was out there competing against the best in a go-cart held together by duct tape and crazy glue?

I'm sure the diehards would remain, but that could shake the on-the-fence fans off pretty quickly.

With the return of Josh Beckett in a winning effort in Seattle, Dustin Pedroia and Jason Varitek working vigorously to get back to full health, and now the return of Victor Martinez, this team may not have to make the big splash that fans are begging for.

After torturing ourselves over the weekend by watching the Red Sox' bullpen cost the team an entire series, and nearly a sweep, Theo will absolutely have to address his catastrophic bullpen.

However, I don't see any teams adding the likes of Josh Beckett, Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Jason Varitek and Jacoby Ellsbury after the trade deadline, as all players mentioned besides Ellsbury have at least one All Star selection under their belt.

No knocks against Bill Hall, who was brought to this team to be nothing more than a utility player, but there were some plays that Pedroia would have made that Hall could not, that may have been pivotal in some games. With that being said, Hall's bat has compensated for his lack of experience being a full-time second baseman.

In the absence of Pedroia and Martinez, the Red Sox have missed out on two players who lead both by example with are great emotional leaders.

Hopefully with one half of the two returning tonight, the Red Sox will light a spark and finish out the dreaded ten-game west coast road trip on a good note.

Will the return of Victor Martinez make a difference in the standings?

The Batter's Box – Episode Two Capsule

Jimmy and Katie squared off in week two of the Batter’s Box tournament. After last week’s blowout in the opening game, everyone was hoping for a better game and viewers were not disappointed.
Both players got off to a slow start in the first inning, failing to move their base runners past first base. The best question without a doubt involved identifying which Red Sox player once stated that he could “will himself invisible.” Too bad Sully’s wasn’t around when those words were spoken because it would have made a killer Sully’s tee. Jimmy and Katie both hit their stride in the second inning plating two runs. Great to see Quincy’s Ken Coleman as an answer choice. Jimmy narrowly escaped with a 4-2 victory in the third inning as Katie barely missed tying the game with a difficult home run question in her last at bat. It is too bad these two had to match up in the first round because they both seemed like interesting people and intense competitors. One can only wonder what other random things Jimmy will expound on in the next episode.

Fogerty Rocks Baseball 2010 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

The Sully’s Crew loves us some Creedence Clearwater Revival. Volume #1 and #2 of their greatest hits are essential listening around our office space. But we can also get down with some of John Fogerty’s solo work. Especially his baseball classic “Centerfield.” In little league, I must have played that song in my head every time I ran out to my spot in centerfield.
We were pleasantly surprised when we heard that Fogerty would be honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown at the 2010 Induction Ceremony. Perhaps a HOF class of the hawk Andre Dawson, manager Whitey Herzog, and umpire Doug Harvey didn’t have enough star power, so they had to bring in the big guns. The baseball HOF rarely does anything out of the ordinary like this, so we’re interested to see where this creative streak will take the HOF.
Check out a video of Fogerty rocking out in a flannel with the baseball bat guitar on stage at the HOF HERE!

Fox25 News Zip Trip Visits Peabody Mass...

No one from the Sully's office was able to get up at the crack of dawn for the Fox25 Zip Trip in Peabody, Massachusetts on Friday, but Sully's patron Ginny pointed out that a kid in a "Lucic Fight Club" tee made it on the air and got a few pics with Fox News talking head VB. Thanks Ginny & Fox25!

Bettman & NHL Finally Take a Stand Against Monster Contracts, but Still Lack Consistency

The Sully’s Crew loves to dump on Gary Bettman for unintentionally (who knows, maybe intentionally) trying to ruin professional ice hockey in North America, but fair is fair. We have to give Bettman credit for finally taking a stand against monster contracts that circumvent the spirit, if not the letter, of the league’s salary cap and collective bargaining agreement. Rejecting Kovalchuk’s seventeen year, $102 million contract may not be supported by any precedent, and it might end up being reversed by an arbitrator, but it was time to step in and at least try to protect the owners from themselves.
A few teams already got away with monster contracts that they will almost certainly regret in the long run (Zetterberg, Hossa, Luongo, Franzen, etc). I am certain the Islanders are already regretting the day they signed DiPietro to a fifteen year deal. While it is entirely possible that Kovalchuk will still be playing productive hockey when he is 44 years old, it is extremely unlikely.
I would love to see some consistency from the NHL because it makes no sense to allow the Caps to sign Ovechkin to a monster 13 year deal, but reject the Kovalchuk contract. Sadly, whether it be officiating, discipline, or really anything, the NHL has rarely been consistent under Bettman’s reign. Not sure how this saga is going to play out, but we believe Kovalchuk will be in Jersey for a very long time.
Can’t wait to see teams with monster deals weighing them down attempt to get under the limit if the salary cap number goes down in the future. How short will NHL bench’s get? Can you still compete only dressing five defensemen, and three-lines with one floater?
