There Will Be Blood? Cooke Out @ the Garden

This we know. The Bruins skate against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins this Thursday night at the Garden. How the Bruins decide to play their fourth and final meeting with the Pens will, perhaps unfairly, define their season, which has been largely disappointing up to this point.

Even without Savard’s injury, the Bruins would have been looking to send a message to the Pens as the teams may meet again in the first round of the playoffs. With Savard’s injury, the Bruins failure to respond, the league’s failure to suspend Cooke, and the passing of a new head shot rule at the General Manager’s meetings, Thursday’s contest might be the most anticipated and closely watched regular season hockey game in Boston in years (save the Winter Classic).

The game is being broadcast nationally on the NHL network. The league has assigned a veteran officiating crew to keep the peace. The league’s principal ‘disciplinarian’ Colin Campbell will be in the building keeping a close eye on the action. On a night that should have been focused on celebrating the 40th anniversary of arguably the greatest Bruins team to ever lace ‘em up, everyone is distracted with revenge. Don’t get me wrong, I love revenge. I have multiple elaborate revenge plots in action right now. When they come to fruition, it will be a thing of beauty. But almost any response the Bruins muster, aside from taking two points away from the contest, will likely be too little, too late.

Revenge in the NHL almost has to be immediate because you can’t count on the league to do the right thing. The players generally do a good job policing the game. There is a good understanding of what is and is not acceptable, and while deviations occur, any player operating consistently outside of the code will have to pay dearly. As a repeat offender, I hope that Cooke is in the line-up tonight and man enough to answer for his actions.

I can almost understand the Bruins not seeking immediate retribution when the hit occurred. There were only a couple of minutes left in a close game and they couldn’t afford to be shorthanded for instigating. And the Bruins didn’t have the proper personnel on the ice to respond. Lucic was ahead of the play and couldn’t have seen the hit, while Ryder, Wideman, and Hunwick aren’t nearly tough enough customers to handle a cheap shot artist like Cooke. But still, seeing your team’s best player unconscious should have spurred someone into action. But it didn’t, and that’s the problem.

Bruins fans have been through a lot over the past several decades, and in recent memory put up with some terribly uninspired hockey from overpaid mediocre players. One thing Bruins fans should never have to accept is a soft team. While the Bruins are in middle of the pack for fighting majors this season, they have been much easier to play against. That must change tonight.

Right off the opening face-off, the Bruins have to let the Pens know that they are in for a long night. Boston cannot get caught of out position running around trying to make a big hit. But the Bs have to finish every check and compete for every puck. Cooke will probably have to drop the gloves. But going after Cooke isn’t the answer. Any chance the Bruins had of advancing beyond the first round of the playoffs evaporated the second Savard hit the ice. It took Patrice Begeron years to regain his all-star form after almost being killed by a hit from behind. Savard might never be the same player again. It isn’t part of hockey to target and intend to injure the opposition’s top talent, but the Bruins should rattle the Pens top players. Malkin is still injured and likely out, but Crosby, Staal, Gonchar, Guerin, and Ponikarovsky should expect to be hit hard all night in all three zones. Anything less is unacceptable.
